CSA Week Nineteen
April has been good to us thus far. The weather has been sweet as we begin the process of putting the farm to rest for the long hot summer ahead. Since we aren't planting new crops, when we harvest a section of the farm it's better to cover it up than leave the soil exposed. On Monday we covered a large portion of our fields with black ground cover to block weeds and protect the soil from erosion. We are also planting buckwheat as a cover crop to protect certain areas. This week we aren't harvesting very much for the shares from our own fields, but we feel grateful that Verde Farm is making one last push to get some amazing crops out of their fields before the season ends. We hope you guys enjoyed Chuck's patty pan squash last week, they are not only adorable, but very tasty too. This week we are going to try his zucchini and we're going to have his pretty cherry tomatoes again because they were so sweet. You'll notice North Carolina sweet potatoes... they are from a really great organic farm so I like to include them in the shares twice a year because we can't grow that crop organically in South Florida due to weevils and it's such a nutritious food. Enjoy and see you on Saturday!
