CSA Week 11

French Farms grew a beautiful crop of savoy cabbages for us. Savor cabbage is the super wrinkly kind, which makes for a great texture when shredded and used raw. They should be delicious! Remember that cabbages store really well so you can keep this veg in the fridge for weeks. You can use half now and wrap the other half in cling wrap for future use.
The shares include French Farms baby lettuce mix again. Chris grows a special variety of lettuce that is becoming very popular on small farms; it's called Salanova and it's special because instead of growing into full sized lettuce heads, Salanova forms a tight cluster of small lettuce leaves so that when they are harvested every leaf is uniform in size. They are very tender and succulent, but more robust that true baby lettuce which is common in store bought mixes that go bad quickly. This lettuce mix has the delicacy and beauty of baby lettuce, but stays fresh waaaaaay longer.
We're excited to include freshly harvested turmeric from Empower Farm in Homestead. Turmeric, ginger and galangal which you got in the shares last week, are all in the same family of plants. Turmeric is the earthiest of the three and it has a bright (almost neon) orange pigment used to dye fabric and color food. Turmeric is considered a super food and is treasured in many cultures for it's healing properties. We're no experts though, you'll have to read for yourselves by doing some research. However we would like to share this recipe for a soothing turmeric chai latte; it is a spin off of a very traditional Indian and Ayurvedic beverage typically drunk before bed called turmeric milk. It's also good in juices, soups and stir fries.
Have you ever had Sapodilla? It's small fruit in the sapote family which includes the more popular and much larger fruit called mamey, also black sapote aka chocolate pudding fruit and of course canistel which we got a couple of weeks ago. Sapodilla is described as having a caramel flavor with a grainy texture very similar to pear. To know when it's ripe, hold it between your fingers and give a gentle squeeze, it should feel like a plum or a persimmon. After peeling the very thin skin and cutting the caramel colored flesh into pieces you can simply enjoy it as a fruit snack.
