Little River is Giving Away a FREE School Garden!
We say it all the time, school gardens are the most important gardens. Sooo we decided to giveaway, AKA install, plant, and prepare one lucky school or youth serving institution for a bountiful & educational growing season to come. While getting the word out about this exciting opportunity, we wanted to use it as a chance to educate as to why these colorful, food abundant spaces are so important to have in our young people's lives.
Research on school gardens tell us that they are a multidisciplinary learning space that also offer hands on insight into nutritional wellness, environmental stewardship, mental & emotional health, community connectedness, and building therapeutic practices. One of the most frequently noted benefits by multiple institutions is the observed increase in consumption & willingness to try fruits & vegetables. Considering half of students' daily calories are eaten at school, a garden present on campus can serve as an incubator for life-long healthy eating behaviors. The magic of school gardens can truly be seen in how student learning experiences are uplifted. Science is an obvious subject to connect to gardens, but history, art, math, and physics can also have lessons tied to what the garden provides. In fact, a study involving 5 classes of 6th grade students over a 10 week period indicated that kids shared feelings of pride, happiness, wonder/surprise and cooperative behavior more often during lessons held in the garden than in the classroom.
We could nerd out endlessly as to why we love school gardens so much. We believe that they are vital spaces to support youth for successful and happy futures and that is why we are so excited to do this giveaway. While promoting people to apply, we will be sharing more compelling findings and inspiring stories to highlight people leading great work in their school gardens. Stay tuned via Instagram and Facebook to keep learning!
