We get a lot of inquiries about gardening workshops, especially at our plant sales when we spend the day giving everyone rushed tidbits of advice.  We want to make sure our plants go off to good homes and that their new owners have the highest success rate possible.  This fall we are offering our gardening workshop designed for beginners, but we'll be covering a wide range of subjects in depth so even a more seasoned gardener can take away useful information. Last fall we started giving this workshop and it was a total hit! We had a great time and everyone learned a lot, so we are happy to be offering it again this year with the hopes up inspiring and educating another generation of home gardeners.

The workshop is $45 per person and includes all materials for demos and a syllabus loaded with resources.  The class takes place at our NEW nursery and demonstration garden located in Allapattah, from 9am till about noon. Classes will start with an introduction to our farm and nursery property, followed by lessons and ending with some time for everyone to ask plenty of questions. For a hands on task all participants will get to plant one seedling tray to take home for their home garden. Our epic heirloom seed collection and our expertise in suggesting what to grow will both be available to you as you choose and plant your seedling tray. Mature plants, seed packets, organic fertilizers, and compost will be for sale after the workshop too!

A brief outline of topics is as follows:

-Planning your garden (picking a location, building raised beds)
-Basic components of soil and how to build/ amend it
-What veggies and fruits to choose for our unique tropical climate, and when to plant them
-How to plant and maintain your home garden properly (planning, spacing, direct seeding versus transplanting seedlings, fertilizing, interplanting)
-Introduction to common South Florida garden pests and how to manage them
-How to tend to your tomatoes (choosing varieties, planting, trellising and pruning, pests)
-Soil building through the season
-Cover cropping and other summer garden preparation (solarization, mulching, tilling)
-Quick guide to home composting for the success of your garden
