Laurus nobilis is an aromatic evergreen tree, or large shrub, with green, glabrous leaves, in the flowering plant family Lauraceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region and is used as a seasoning in cooking. It’s common names include bay laurel, sweet bay, true laurel, Grecian laurel, laurel tree, or simply laurel. Bay Leaf is prominent in classical Greek and Roman culture, in addition to being frequently mentioned in the Bible. These trees grow slowly in South Florida, but do flourish with time. One small tree and you will never again need to purchase dried leaves from the store for use in your soups & stews. We love having one in the garden!
