Korean Hand Scythe - Tiffanys favorite hand tool
Fun fact: zero professional gardeners use trowels or spades to transplant plants into their gardens! Its like, not really a useful tool for someone trying to get stuff done. Most farmers and professional gardeners use a type of “hand hoe” for garden work. We sell two different hand hoes for you to choose from, Tiffanys favorite and Muriels favorite.
Why Tiffany, and many of our other gardeners, love this tool is in its versatility as a gardening hand tool. The shape of this curved hand plow means that there is a pointy/ thin end, and a thick/ wide/ flat end, and there are options in-between. The pointy end is useful for getting into the soil and chopping things up, and then once the soil is loose you can use the wider part to plow soil out of the way of your hole. This might get awkward to explain with words but you can also use the tool to hold loose soil out of the way of the hole. So, youre digging a hole and then you leave the tool in the hole, pushed to one side, and it acts as a wall to keep the loose soil you’ve dug out of the way. put the plants root ball in the hole, remove your hand tool and let the loose soil fall back into the hole. Turn the plow on its wide flat edge and you can use it to push soil around, or you can use it to “scuffle weed” aka scrape the surface of your soil to kill small new weeds.
This centuries old Korean tool is hand forged and strong while also being lightweight. Tiffany has joked that if she could replace her hand with a single tool, it would be this one! If you have a larger garden and wish to use this tool to make long troughs for planting there is a long handled option that we don’t sell but you can locate it online.
