Granular organic fertilizer is an absolute necessity for planting vegetables in your raised bed garden, and there are a few options we have in our web store for you to choose from. Sustane is the brand of fertilizers that we use in our gardens and our edible plant starts, but to be totally honest the main reason why is because we can get it in large quantities locally (versus these small bags for home gardeners like you).

What makes this product unique is its use of turkey litter instead of chicken (chicken is less ethically desired because its a by product of the industrial chicken & egg factory farming system) and its slow release formula. It also contains 5% humates by volume, which is important for cation exchange capacity (your plants ability to absorb available nutrients) and your soils water holding capacity.

This products NPK balance is 824, which means it is a “high nitrogen” fertilizer, not a balanced one. We recommend purchasing this product if you’re planning on growing lots of leafy green stuff in your bed this season, like herbs, lettuce, arugula & kale. Nitrogen is the key building block of green growth in edible plants, so its only recommended to really pile it on like this if thats your primary crop. If you give something like this to tomatoes for example, it’ll make you lots of plant, but wont focus its energy on making you fruit. If you give it to sweet potatoes, it’ll use the extra nitrogen to make more leafy growth instead of taking its energy and putting it into making you tubers.
