Klip Dagga is a cool medicinal plant that fellow specialty growers Sow Exotic introduced us to a few years ago. Their wild exhibition garden is full of this beautiful bee and pollinator friendly flowering medicinal herb. Klip Dagga is native to tropical Africa and Southern India but is found abundantly in Latin America and the West Indies. it grows to about 9 feet tall and has whorls of bright orange lipped flowers that pollinators love. The leaf tea has a hypnotic effect, is diuretic and relieves headache. The leaf and stem decoction or inhalations have been used internally for cough, common cold, influenza, bronchitis, wound healing and asthma. The infusions made from flowers and seeds, leaves or stems are widely used as tonics for tuberculosis, jaundice, muscular cramps, high blood pressure, diabetes, viral hepatitis, dysentery, and diarrhea. The leaves and stems decoction are applied topically as a treatment for eczema, skin infections and itchiness. Klip Dagga smoke has marijuana-like effects and pungent odor and is occasionally mixed with other dried herbs to make smoking blends. Wether you use this unique plant medicinally or not its definitely a fun specimen to have in the garden for aesthetics and pollinators to enjoy. Save a few spiky seed balls when they’re brown and dry and you’ll have plenty of viable seed for next season.

Plant and growing tips: Klip dagga is easy to germinate from seed. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in premoistened potting mix in a small pot or seedling tray. Keep cells moist in partial shade until germination, when they can be moved to full sun exposure. Seeds take 5-7 days to germinate. We recommend starting seeds in a controlled environment instead of direct seeding right into your garden although if you are hoping to just have them as a wild part of your garden sprinkling seeds before a rain storm will do the trick. Plants stick to vegitative growth as the days are shortening and begin flowering in abundance as they lengthen.

All seeds were harvested from our urban farm and plant nursery in 2022. Seed packages are hand silkscreened by Gold Teeth Brooklyn, a handmade stationery company based in Los Angeles.

Seeds have been tested for reliable germination in our nursery at 80 degree daytime temperatures. We recommend using them within 1 year of date of purchase.
