This prizehead leafy lettuce is a loose heading type with exceptionally large leaves. Commercial growers like it for its uniformity, color and excellent resistance to bolting and disease, which is critical for a lettuce variety in our climate. The market-quality, large, loose heads are green at the base and in the center and dark red at the ruffled leaf edges where the light hits it most. This variety has strong heat tolerance. It is suitable both for cool and warm conditions and retains its crisp fresh flavor through the growing season. Lettuce needs a minimum of 8 hours of direct sunlight in order to grow to maturity so if you don’t have that much in your garden we suggest only growing lettuce for baby leaf harvest. To do that direct seed lettuce in a thin line down your garden bed (instead of trying to fill a square foot with perfectly spaced out seeds) and cover lightly with soil. when the leaves are finger length harvest them all with scissors. A few weeks later they will grow back and you can “cut and come again” your baby leaf lettuce patch.
