Gailaan is the Chinese name for a vegetable that is also known as Chinese broccoli, Chinese kale, kailaan, and we bet it has a few other names too. It is a leafy vegetable featuring thick, flat, glossy blue-green leaves with thick stems, and flower heads similar to but much smaller than broccoli. Its flavor is very similar to that of broccoli, but slightly more tender and sweet. It is also noticeably stronger. We love Gailaan for its texture and flavor and its quite easy to grow. Once you cut the whole thick stalk of the plant a few inches above the ground it will sprout side-shoots that are thinner and flower quickly however they are also a delight in the kitchen.

Once when French Farms grew an absolutely beautiful crop of this for our CSA we had a customer complain that it was the smallest broccoli they had ever seen with almost no useable flower head… dont be tricked by the name broccoli, the harvest in this plant is the thick stem and edible kale-like leaves. If you’ve eaten “Chinese broccoli” then you’ve had this easy to grow green before.
