Last season we ran a bit of an experiment by trying a a selection of dwarf plants recently bred as part of the “Dwarf Tomato project”, the first open sourced tomato breeding project composed of all volunteer, amateur & hobby gardeners led by breeders Craig LeHoullier & Patrina Nuske-Small. After growing about 6 of these varieties we are now offering our favorite one in the nursery: Sweet Scarlet. These plants may look strange to you but its because they are all “potato leaf” aka rugose foliage types, so their leaves are darker colored and more textured, with a distinct shape too. Sweet scarlet produces medium to large 10-16 ounce scarlet red tomatoes with intense, delicious and perfectly balanced flavors. According to the breeders it's the very best flavored fruit of all the Dwarf Tomato Project varieties.
