Baby Salad Lettuce
Our CSA is lucky to have access to what we know is the best salad lettuce mix in town! Chris over at French Farms is obsessed with a new variety of baby head lettuce that does the impossible: it stays sweet in our hot climate. Another plus to this stellar variety: its a true baby head, so all of the leaves are small when mature. "Salanova" is its name and its a total game changer. When we order Salanova lettuce mix from French Farms farmer Chris wakes up crazy early on Saturday morning and harvests the tender leaves in the dark, so you get the freshest salad possible. The mix is washed and dried at the farm so you can just dump the half pound bag you get in your CSA share right into your favorite salad bowl and eat it up. Leave the sweet potatoes, carrots, turnips and radishes for later in the week and make sure to eat the salad mix first thing, although it will store in the fridge in the plastic bag you pick it up in.
Once our nasturtiums start producing flowers at the farm we tend to throw them in the top of your salad mix bag for a pop of color. They don't like getting wet so if you're making a tossed salad leave them till the very end then just throw them on top. They aren't all looks, they have a fun spicy flavor profile.
