Not to get too "conspiracy theory" on you guys, but popular fruit didn't become popular fruit by coincidence or even because they are tasty. Countries and states have an incentive to market a particular fruit that is produced within their region in order to improve their own economy. For example, the state of Washington has a Washington Apple Commission whose job it is to advertise, promote and develop markets for fresh apples. It is a government agency yet it is governed and fully funded by apple growers. We're all familiar with Florida's orange industry and how marketing was used to lure to new pioneers from the north at the turn of the century. These days Florida promotes mangoes all over the country to increase sales for our hometown mango growers. The same happened with bananas
