The Brogden avocado is a variety we are very excited to get our hands on this year. This new cultivar, bred locally in Winter Haven Florida, is the closest thing you're going to get to a rich, creamy, high fat Hass variety, like the ones in the grocery store. Plus, the skin is so thin that its edible! This avocado has a great flavor, is very productive and will produce a decent amount even when young.

Avocado trees are quite common and easy to grow in South Florida. They can handle sandy or rocky soil, wont need to be irrigated after establishment, and require minimal feeding. There are a few pests going around these days, most notably laurel wilt (spread by the Ambrosia beetle), which cant be treated and will eventually require that the plant be destroyed. With heavy pruning your avocado can be kept smaller and low, making fruit easier to harvest.

Photos are from our neighbors, Miami Fruit, where you can order yourself a box of fruit to try!
