When shopping for lettuce head varieties it is of most importance that you get “heat tolerant” varieties. Many of the fancy varieties like “speckled deer tongue” won’t grow well in our hot winter months, and they will respond to the heat by “bolting”, which makes them inedible. When your lettuce starts to get “tall” like it's reaching to the sky, that means it's bolting; aka trying to flower and reproduce. Many of the wilder and more unique and colorful speckled varieties are super heat intolerant but over the years we have come to rely on one particular strain of speckled lettuce bred by "wild Garden Seed" in Oregon, who are known for their extra diverse lettuce breeding projects. While this lettuce does have a funny name its no joke in the garden and holds up to our heat while making beautiful ornamental speckled heads. Plant densely for baby leaf production or harvest whole heads when large.
