Join us and our friend Gabe Orta from Bar Lab cocktails at our nursery and urban garden Sunday, February 18th for a super special bitters and tropical shrub workshop! This time of year our nursery garden is bursting at the seam with beautiful edible flowers, every herb you can imagine, and flavorful veggies like heirloom tomatoes and spicy peppers... the perfect ingredients for preserving the season with homemade bitters. Participants in this workshop will be taught the basics of making bitters and their uses in the kitchen, bar and medicine cabinet after which they will explore the garden and harvest their own ingredients for vials of bitters to make and take home. 

In addition to crafting garden bitters Gabe will demonstrate how to make a shrub out of tropical fruits and herbs. Shrubs are drinking vinegars which are gaining popularity for their unique flavors and versatile use in making cocktails. Miamis tropical fruit scene is full of inspiring ingredients like starfruit, cardamom, dragon fruit, papaya, passionfruit, and pineapples which can all be used for making shrubs. 

Once we are all done with our bitters and shrubs Gabe will mix us all a tropical punch cocktail with some of his homemade bitters, fresh fruit, and herbs from the garden and we can all relax in the garden and imbibe! (fun non-alcoholic beverages can also be made)

You may know Gabe Orta, co-founder of Bar Lab, from his incredibly popular bar The Broken Shaker at the Freehand on Miami Beach. We have had the honor of tending the Broken Shaker and 27 Restaurant edible garden for two seasons and in that time we have been so inspired by Gabes creativity when being presented with unusual local ingredients to transform into award winning cocktails. 

Bar Lab has been awarded numerous professional accolades and honors, including: Twice named James Beard finalist for “Outstanding Bar Program”; ranking on the ‘World's 50 Best Bars’ list at #14, and in 2015 they won the coveted ‘Spirited Award’ at Tales of the Cocktail for ‘Best American Hotel Bar’. 

Farmers Muriel and Tiffany will be on hand to introduce everyone to some of the more unusual ingredients growing in the garden and to answer any questions you may have about gardening, whats in season, how to harvest, and much more.
