Thought to have originated in Assam and Burma, Neem trees are attractive broad-leaved evergreens. They remain in leaf except during extreme drought, when leaves may fall off. The short, usually straight trunk has a moderately thick, strongly furrowed bark. The roots penetrate soil deeply, where the sites permit and produce suckers particularly when injured. This suckering tends to be especially prolific in drier climates. Neem can withstand harsh growing conditions and stopped trunks re-sprout vigorously, freely coppices. The small, white, bisexual flowers have a honey like scent and attract bees. An ancient medicinal tree, Neem is celebrated for its remarkable healing properties as far back as 5,000 BCE. Described in ancient Indian Ayurvedic texts as ‘Sarva roga nivarini’ (the universal healer of all ailments) and ‘Nimba’ (giver of good health), neem’s name is ‘Arista’ in Sanskrit – meaning ‘perfect, complete and imperishable.’
