Strawflowers are a beautiful cut flower addition to any garden. Needing about a square foot of garden space when mature, these annuals will thrive through the subtropical winter months producing tons of papery, dazzling flowers for you to pick and bring inside or simply admire in the garden. They are also great for crafts as they are easily dried (even in our humid weather!). If you end up with a number of blooms drying and producing seed on the plant, you can ‘dead head’ them, which is a fancy term for cutting the dead flowers off the plant so that it will produce more flowers and send less energy elsewhere. When growing cut flower varieties, the more you harvest the flowers, the more blooms you will get. Expect your strawflower plants to be slow to start but steady and large through the season.
