While we usually recommend home gardeners not plant cabbages in their small spaces, we love this small headed resilient, disease resistant savoy cabbage. As it grows, this savoy produces beautiful dark crinkled leaves and then a petite cabbage head forms in the center. The whole plant greatly resembles a big beautiful green rose! Besides its beauty it grows quickly and is resistant to many mildew varieties. In our farm and garden trials we’ve noticed it has outgrown all other varieties and we rarely loose a plant after transplanting. We often use cabbage as an example of a “not worth it” crop especially for gardeners with small spaces (because its a large plant, takes a long time, and makes you a very affordable food crop that ships and stores well) but if you’ve got the space and you appreciate your garden for aesthetics as well, then its definitely “worth it” to make some space for this beauty.
