Understanding Soil, Building Fertility and Mastering Compost Workshop, Saturday December 3rd

For the past 10 years we've been helping beginner gardeners in South Florida figure out the very basics of veggie growing with our Introduction to Vegetable Gardening Workshop. To follow up that series we've written a curriculum focused entirely on soil and compost; what seem to be the most mysterious elements of gardening for more experienced gardeners.

Understanding the basics of soil structure, soil life and how soil is formed will empower you to create fertility in your garden, often using materials that are otherwise considered waste. In this workshop we will give you a foundation of soil basics and teach some of the tools and tricks for building fertility in your garden. This workshop is aimed at gardeners who already have some experience and a home garden to apply these techniques to, however all are welcome to come and learn with us.

Each workshop is $45 per person and includes all materials for demos and a syllabus loaded with resources. Class will start with sit-down lessons and proceed with a tour of the farm and nursery so we can see and inspect all of the different ways that we compost and build soil. Participants will take home a 2 pound bag of compost from A Zero Waste Culture to use in their home garden.

A brief outline of topics is as follows:

-Historical and geological makeup of soil profile in South Florida
-Soil considerations unique to growing in a city
-Definition of terms: all the basic components of healthy soil
-Macronutrients and how to build them in your soil
-Micronutrients and why your garden needs them
-Feeding your soil and not your plants
-An introduction to soil biology: worms, mycellium & microbes
-The importance of water and air to soil
-What is pH and how to alter it for happier plants
-Sheet mulching, wooden mulch, bedding, cover cropping & hay
-Vermicomposting with earthworms and millipedes
-How to properly compost at home
