CSA Week 5
This week Chris French from French Farm (pictured above) is harvesting his first head lettuce for you and Chris Worden of Worden Farm is harvesting his first tomatoes of the season! The Gailan chinese broccoli is also a first for this season and that crop is very unique; you will most likely not find it in the stores. Gailan is a unlike other chinese broccoli varieties because it forms an extra fat stem which is tender and edible; the flower bud is small and often times a few of the flowers are wide open, making it look like a bouquet more than a vegetable. Every part of Gailan is edible, it's stem, leaves and flowers. Most of the items in the share this week will keep for a while so there's no rush to gobble it up quickly. Fennel, radishes and peppers could make it into next week easily, but you have to remember to take the tops off of your radishes in order for them to stay crisp and fresh.
About last week and that rain. Setting up the market booth was a challenge but were happy to do it because getting the CSA shares out to you is at the top of our priority list. However, we did cancel the farm open house because getting soaked for fun (especially after a wet market day) is not a priority. We still really want to show you guys the farm so look out for a new date in January after the holidays! How about those eggplants though?! We grilled ours last night and they were so good. Cut right down the middle lengthwise, rubbed generously with olive oil salt and pepper and put them face down on hot coals until they got a toasty color; then we cooked them face up for another 10 minutes. They were perfect.
*Please make a note that we will be skipping CSA pick up for the holidays. There will be no pick up on Saturday December 24th or Saturday December 31st. You'll get weekly reminders during that time so that you don't forget there's no pick up.
