Another farm favorite lettuce variety for us and French Farms is this Johnnys Select Seed Mini Gem Romaine mix. Large romaine can be very hard to grow here because of the heat but because these mature so quickly they are much easier to get that crisp tight crunchy head of romaine from. Make sure you pick the sunniest spot in your yard for these babies or they might bolt before maturing, as romaines are also quite sensitive to a lack of sun. Home gardeners often think that because lettuce is papery and delicate that it needs to be grown in the shade but thats only true if you’re trying to grow it in the very intense heat of the summer. During our winter growing seasons you should strive to get your lettuce patch 8 hours of sun per day (which is already partial sun, since a full day is like 14 hours!)

If you plan on harvesting these "cut and come again" style just keep in mind you wont get the romaine style blanched heart, but you’ll still get nice firm crunchy lettuce leaves.

We sell red & green gem romaines in 4” plants and in 6 packs of mixed 1” plants.
