Mary’s Garden, a poolside growing space built between the Broken Shaker bar and 27 Restaurant at The Freehand Miami was one of LRCs very first projects. The original garden was built in 2015 and consisted of 12 wooden raised beds and a small collection of tropical fruit trees. In 2021 the space was reconfigured to incorporate a garden dining area for private events, and was rebuilt out of corrugated metal Vego beds. The focus of this garden has always been to produce hard to find culinary gems for the award winning bar and restaurant teams that harvest from it daily. Specialty herbs like Peruvian huacatay, lemon verbena, salad burnet, galangal and chinese keys ginger are incorporated into the restaurants daily specials while an array of peppers like aji limon, aji dulce, Helios habanero, and Thai chillis are picked daily and preserved for later use in sauces. Mixologists from the Broken Shaker start their nights shift by picking edible flowers like violas, pansies, marigolds, tarragon and sweet alyssum from the garden for use as garnish in their creations and make syrups, bitters and other potions out of the fruit trees, herbs and spices. A custom designed automatic irrigation system makes managing the garden on a day to day basis hands off for the busy staff and Little River Coop comes by to maintain and replant the garden biweekly.
