Yardlong Beans are our favorite weirdo beans to grow in South Florida because they love our hot and humid tropical climate and are really fun to look at, harvest and cook with. These beans are referred to as “yardlong noodle” because they’re long and skinny like a noodle and supposedly can grow up to a yard long, although we mostly see beans around 16-20” at harvest time. While these can take a little while to start bearing fruit compared to other beans they do produce 4 beans per flower so a small patch of them can produce quite a surprising amount of food. Chop the beans in to little pieces for a more normal dining experience, or cut them down the middle into two long halves of bean and make a salad with them that resembles a noodle dish! Purple pods do loose some color when cooked but if just quickly blanched they can remain purple on the plate. yardlong beans are pole types so they need to be trellised. This is a great variety to include if youre building yourself a “bean teepee” or looking for something super easy to grow on a trellis.
