Rue, common rue or herb-of-grace, is a species of Ruta grown as an ornamental plant and herb. It is native to the Balkan Peninsula. It is grown throughout the world in gardens, especially for its bluish leaves, and sometimes for its tolerance of hot and dry soil conditions. It is also cultivated as a culinary herb, and to a lesser extent as an insect repellent and incense. Rue is the host plant for 3 different types of butterflies.. the Black Swallowtail, Anise Swallowtail and the Giant Swallowtail butterflies.

The bitter taste of its leaves led to rue being associated with the (etymologically unrelated) verb rue to regret". Rue is well known for its symbolic meaning of regret and it has sometimes been called "herb-of-grace" in literary works.

Rue is considered safe when consumed in food flavoring quantities but unsafe when taken in large doses and as medicine. It can cause side effects such as stomach irritation, changes in mood, sleep problems, dizziness, spasms, liver damage or death. Please plant with caution.
