Volunteer Opportunity at MCI
Join us for a reccuring volunteer opportunity every other Thursday at the Miami Culinary Institute garden.
This garden is a hidden gem in the midst of the hustle and bustle of downtown Miami. In the 7 years that our team has been in charge of cultivating this garden many new sky rises have gone up around us, a few of them directly across the street. The almost 7,000 square foot plot features an amazing collection of mature rare fruit trees; trees like Makrut Lime, Cattley Guava and Black Sapote create a seamless canopy around the perimeter of the garden. The middle of the space is wide open to the sun and features a series of oversized circular planting beds for annual vegetables and herbs. Check out the garden here.
Volunteer days are a great opportunity to spend time in nature with like minded people from all walks of life. Join our gardener team which is there to guide various activities like weeding, planting and pruning. We supply the necessary gardening tools, but it's a good idea to bring your own gloves, sun protection and water bottle.

Spring Kids Celebration
Every spring we host a fun farm farm day for the kiddos at our nursery so we can all enjoy being out in nature before it gets too hot. Come to shop for spring plants and stay to participate in some of our fun and free kiddo activities!
Together we will release ladybugs into our family garden, build a GIGANTIC teepee out of monster-sized bamboo and plant beans to grow up it. We will also have a seed planting station so you and your little can plant some sunflowers and take them home to watch them grow, and a face painting station where you can choose to get adorned with bugs, flowers & leaves.
Ladybug release is happening at 12 noon.
The rest of the activities will be ongoing.
Bring water and snacks!
And please leave your dog at home.

Introduction to WINTER Veggie Gardening in South Florida
Our second workshop of the season will be an Introduction to Veggie Gardening in South Florida with an emphasis on the tasks and info crucial to success in the WINTER. Winter is the middle of our growing season (its the opposite from the rest of the country) and its when you'll start to encounter some challenges like properly harvesting and dealing with pests and fertility. Winter is also a great time to trellis & prune your tomato plants, and make hard decisions about which plants can stay in your garden for the end of season and which ones you should replace while you still can.
This workshop is a 1.5 hour lecture where we focus on the following:
-how has the sun moved in the sky and how does that effect your garden
-which new crops are best for planting now in our cooler weather
-how to succession plant for continual harvest through the season
-methods for continued organic fertility
-the basics of organic pest management practices
-basic harvesting techniques & post harvesting tips to keep your veggies fresh
-trellising & pruning tomatoes
After that we move on to a hands on demonstration where we use the verdant fields of French Farms to show some hands on techniques like thinning root crops and harvesting lettuce and herbs using the "cut and come again" method. We will also check out the exhibition beds by our plant nursery to diagnose any mid season issues we see, plus we can answer any questions you may have about issues you are facing in your own garden.
Saturday, February 1st, 11am - 1pm
Little River Coop Nursery
22305 SW 157th Avenue
Redland, FL. 33170
Due to the intimate nature of the workshops we do not offer refunds for cancellations but we oftentimes have a waitlist so with enough warning we can try to replace you and then refund your payment.

Nursery Open 10-5
Every weekend through the main growing season our edible plant nursery is open to the public. Our nursery is nestled in the Castellow Hammock nature preserve in the Redland, about an hour south of downtown Miami. We share a 5 acre parcel with French Farms, a 2 acre regenerative diversified vegetable farm. Visitors to our nursery are encouraged to explore the fields, check out our demonstration garden, shop for plants and hang out and bring a pick nick. Produce from French Farms is only for sale if ordered online in advance.
The nursery is full of informative signs about every plant we offer, and we only sell plants that are season and climate appropriate. Check out our Plant Index to learn all about the different varieties we offer. We also sell seed packets from Kitazawa Seed Co, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and Plant Good Seed, along with gardening tools, organic fertilizers & pesticides, and garden soil.
