Introduction to Gardening Workshop: FALL
For the past 10 years we have been teaching in person workshops about veggie gardening in South Florida at our nursery, however as part of our Covid pivot we recorded our most popular 4 part Introduction to South Florida Gardening and made it a virtual offering. The content in these virtual workshops is almost identical to the in-person offerings, so if the timing isn't right or you don't want to make the trek to our nursery this is a great option for you to learn from us.
Video one is our "fall" section and it focuses on starting a new veggie garden in your yard & planning its initial planting. We start with an hour long lecture-style discussion of the following topics:
-how to asses your yard for optimum sun & pick a location
-about our unique seasons & our USDA plant hardiness zone
-why we garden in raised beds
-what type of soil do we garden in and why
-organic soil amendments and how to choose the right ones for your garden
-planning your garden, what to plant where & when
-square foot gardening
-succession planting
-easy to grow crops
-a bit about the importance of composting
After that we move on to a hands on demonstration where we install & plant a standard 4 x 8 foot raised bed in a customers yard. We will go through all of the steps outlined in the lecture, show you how we chose the location, how we built the raised bed, and we plant some popular herbs in the garden to show you our favorite planting & watering techniques.
If you are planning on starting yourself a garden this fall then this workshop is for you, since it goes through our time tested steps for planting gardens for people all over town.
