Spring Plants
Technically Spring lasts from March 19th - June 21st, when summer technically begins however as a growing season based on weather and temperature we consider it to be the months of March, April & May. South Florida is incredibly unique in that we start our annual veggie growing season in the Fall and we end it in Spring. For the rest of the country, the opposite is true. The main reasons why we do this is because we don't receive frost during the winter and because of the extreme humidity we experience in the summer makes it challenging to grow annuals.
Spring in South Florida is marked by slightly increased temperatures and slightly increased humidity from winter, so that means that our least heat tolerant crops need to be set aside until next year. Those include (but are definitely not limited to) snap peas, lettuces, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, celery and carrots. Even though you might be reading this on April 5th and its not that hot outside, you need to think about the entire length of the life of the plant until harvest, not just the weather today. For example, carrots take 80 days from seed to maturity, so if you planted them on April 5th you wouldn't be harvesting until June 17th, which is much too rainy and hot for carrots.
Check out our selection of season appropriate plants for your home garden for a good idea of what you can plant for spring. Going with the flow of the seasons, instead of fighting them, is the easiest way to enjoy gardening and experience success. If you haven't heard of some of the plants we suggest for spring, thats understandable and very normal. Many of our more humidity tolerant varieties aren't well known in America but they are incredibly popular sources of food in their countries of origin like Thailand, Suriname, Laos, and Australia.
You might have noticed that the way we sell plants has changed a bit this Spring. We have reduced the opening hours of our plant nursery, located in the Redland, and we have removed our "online plant shop" from the website. These changes will help us through some short term staffing issues and will allow us the mental space we need to figure out some big moves, like where we will be growing next season, since our current farm property is for sale. If you are looking for spring plants, check out our plant categories online for what we will have in stock and then come by the nursery during one of our plant sales, or come shop at the Legion Park Farmers Market every Saturday from 9-2, through mid April. Our calendar is a great resource if you want to come shop but arent sure when we will be open.
