CSA Week 13
This week is important for us because our efforts to grow more of the items for the CSA have paid off! Back in December when the fields at our urban farm started to give us problems (we had a horrible aphid break out that we've been referring to as the "aphid apocalypse") we made a bold move and started farming some of French Farms field for certain CSA crops. This week we are harvesting 90% of the CSA shares from our urban farm and from French Farm fields!
Fava tips are probably the most unusual item in the share this week. We've been growing them all season for chefs around town and we thought it was about time we grew enough quantity for you guys. Although we'd love to grow actual fava beans, sadly they don't set fruit in our Miami climate so the best thing we can do is grow them for their tender and deliciously nutty plant tips. They are essentially very similar to pea shoots, but they have way more body, fleshier leaves and a more pronounced flavor. They can certainly be eaten raw in salads, wraps or sandwiches, but they are also very tasty when sauteed or steamed just a bit. We've found that they store for a long time in the fridge so you don't have to rush to gobble them up.
There are so many great stir fry ingredients in this week's share. You have Gailan again, the Chinese flowering broccoli which has edible leaves flowers and stem. You have bok choi, a classic stir fry star and of course turnips and carrots are always a sweet addition to a skillet. However, hakurei turnips in particular are perfectly suited to being eaten raw. Their refreshing sweetness and crisp texture are great over a bed of any greens with almost any dressing, from a simple oil and vinegar to a creamy ranch. Over the weekend we served them at our farm open house as part of a crudite platter with an herb and garlic yogurt dip. So so so simple and so so so good.
