Week 17, Back to Baby Vegetables
The end of the growing season tends to look a lot like the beginning of the season. The selection of vegetables starts ti shrink back and we depend more on quick growing crops and baby vegetables because the weather becomes too erratic for long term crops. Long term crops like broccoli, full grown carrots and beets require as much consistency as possible in the weather for a long period of time. In March we just don't have that anymore. This week's share includes two veggies (ironically in the same family) that can harvested as baby or as full grown. Carrots and fennel are both really cute and delicious when harvested a bit young. They will be more tender and mild than their full grown selves. If we let them grow to full size we'd risk either loosing the crop altogether (either to insects or disease) or we'd most likely end up with tough slightly bitter vegetables.
